INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHY

If you are tired of using your camera in AUTO mode and are ready to explore the MANUAL function, this workshop is for you.  We will demystify all those buttons, dials and panels while simultaneously doing technical experimentation.  The three components of exposure will be explained in great detail, supported by visual presentations and supplemental handouts.

*Students must bring a digital camera, 16GB memory care, charged battery and tripod.

This workshop is intended for those who have basic understanding of their camera.  We will begin with an exposure refresher and continue refining the applications of the camera’s functions as a creative tool.  Lenses and filters will be discussed. This workshop will be supported by visual presentations and supplemental handouts.

*Students must bring a digital camera, 16 GB memory card, charged battery and tripod.

Prerequisite: Basic understanding of the camera’s functions in manual mode.


SEEING NATURE THROUGH THE CREATIVE EYE

Learn to photograph water landscape, create images that sparkle, shimmer and shine.  In Michigan, we’re surrounded by many beautiful water photography settings.  In this course you’ll learn tips and techniques for achieving high image quality, heightened awareness to creativity and beauty found in nature.  Session one includes choosing the right gear, tools, and learning how to ensure image sharpness from front to back. Day two includes composition and exposure techniques.  You’ll learn how to photograph water images with: reflections, ice, smooth and silky (slow shutter speed) and powerful action.

Come learn and experience Street Photography techniques first hand through this intensive 8 hour workshop. Together we will view and discuss some of the Great Masters of Street Photography, as well as some modern photographers. We will look at many composition techniques and then apply them as we wander the streets during the out-of-the-classroom portion! We will discuss how to overcome the fear of photographing strangers and rather converting that into a message that is driven by your creative eye and unique voice. 

The final session we will meet at the studio to edit the images from the field session and explore basic editing techniques in Adobe Lightroom.

This workshop is for you if you want to up your Street Photography game and all the while meet other passionate Street Photographers and storytellers!

So, you’ve captured some great digital images! What are you going to do with them now? Let’s bring them to life with Adobe Lightroom editing software. Students will gain a basic understanding of file management, organization and post processing using Adobe Lightroom CC Classic.  Topics include navigating the LR interface and the essential skills to enhance your images. Supplemental handouts will accompany each session.

This workshop aims to introduce students to the basic functions of Photoshop CC.

Topics include:-

The tool box, where to locate layers and adjustment layers.  What the tools are used for in adjusting your images.

How to navigate the 3 sections of the program which are: Bridge, Camera Raw, and Photoshop proper.

How to touch up photos, remove dust, make color adjustments

Selections, quick masks, layer masks

We all use our Smartphone to photograph events of our lives. In this workshop we will discuss some popular styles of photography so we can think about what photographs you like to capture. This will help you develop and enhance your own style. We will explore the features on your Smartphone and learn how to set it up to capture the best possible images at a high quality. 

Smartphone cameras, like all cameras give us a view of the world which is very different to how we see with our eye. Here, we will explore how to compose the perfect image, implementing motion and depth. This understanding utilizes full control over your Smartphone photography. 

Social Media, the big attraction of Smartphone photography is the ability to share your images. You can take an image and share it with the world in seconds. In this workshop we will learn how to utilize various social media platforms and we look at ways to get more people to see your photos and increase your likes and follows. 

Today, there is nearly as much interest in editing and enhancing pictures as there is in taking photos. In this workshop we will explore creative enhancements with various mobile photo editing apps. Mastering these skills will transform your images and give them an impressive edge.

This workshop is the perfect introduction to digital organization. This workshop will use images already on your laptop or shot in between sessions. We will discuss theme, file organization, image sizing.  It is an introductory course for those intimidated by the technical choices of digital output .  We will use a reputable print company to make the final printed piece.

Bring your favorite bottle of wine and your camera. We’ll jumpstart your creativity with always changing topics for inspiration. Working in small groups, each participant will create an image inspired by the topic of the evening. This is the perfect opportunity to create a one of a kind still life of that favorite fruit bowl you bought at the antique store. From portraits to abstract photography, allow us to create a unique studio experience certain to satisfy your creative curiosity. We’ll supply the cups and light snacks ( which will most definitely include chocolate!)

Premiere Pro CC - Intro to Video Editing

From YouTube tutorial videos to epic films, Premiere Pro has been the go to video software use by both amateurs and professionals. This workshop will introduce the Premiere interface, navigational tools and effects necessary to create professional quality videos. Required supplies - students must bring a laptop with an active subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud - Premiere Pro CC. An External HD is highly recommended.

This is the perfect opportunity to get feedback on personal work or guidance for your next level. S. Kay Young is a Native American Detroit based artist and art advocate with a 44 year photographic career. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections, including The Detroit Institute of Arts, The University of Michigan and Cobo Center (The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority) in Detroit. Kay is represented by Melannie Chard, CEO of M Contemporary Art in Ferndale, MI. Click below for Kay’s full bio.

Bring in your working photography portfolio for review.  There should be at least 10 pieces and no more than 20 in the portfolio.  Direction for growth, change and a constructive critique will help you to present and analyze your work.  You will have a full 20 minutes to ask a working artist any questions you may have about exhibiting work and how to approach galleries and museums. You will also be advised how to price work for sales and growth.  Be prepared with a list of issues you choose to address.  You can also pitch an installation idea for direction or galleries that support that discipline.

EXHIBITION AND ONLINE GALLERY

Those who complete a minimum of one workshop will be invited to participate in a student exhibition event in June.  The minimal fee to enter will include printing and framing materials, promotional materials and light refreshments. The artwork will then be available for purchase in our online gallery.  This is a great opportunity to show the world your greatness!


COMMUNITY PROJECTS

We are excited to team up with Humble Design -a non-profit helping families transitioning out of homeless shelters by providing furnishings and design services.  This workshop will culminate with a matted and framed 8” x 10” photographic print to be donated to Humble Design.


PERSONAL PROJECT

$50 per hour

$200 five hour max. 

Do you have a personal project that you would like to bring into being?  But, it is difficult to articulate the concept and production?   Or, perhaps you simply want to create a body of work that focuses on one topic.  (For example, 12 images of flowers.) This two option offering is perfect for you! Schedule a session today!  Offered Monday, Tuesday and Saturday. Based on availability.

A.  CONCEPT

Schedule a private session to work through all the details from concept to production in an organized and realistic timeline. We will discuss all the details that will make this project come to life.  I call it, minimizing the variables.  The more you research and understand the concept, the fewer visual “choices” you have.  From camera techniques to metaphors, let’s dissect your project and prep it to shoot.

B.  STUDIO

Available to students that have taken past workshops and would like to use the studio to work on a personal project.  Allow me to be your assistant! Schedule a studio time and utilize our space and equipment to create that project you've always wanted to create!   Or, simply the opportunity to advance your technical skills. Please note - This offering is NOT available to commercial photographers. 


PRIVATE LESSONS

For those who prefer one on one instruction with the camera and / or Lightroom.  Using visual slide presentations, supplemental handouts and field experience (camera), you will gain confidence and technical proficiency in the topic of interest. Call to discuss a plan that suits your needs.
